Dr Delendra (Del) Wijayanayaka

Dr Wijayanayaka is a Bariatric and General Surgeon residing in Cairns. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Auckland. Following internship, he was selected to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) General Surgery training program, and worked across many New Zealand hospitals throughout his training. Dr Wijayanayaka worked as a doctor in the New Zealand public health system for 11 years, followed by a further 2 years in Australian public hospitals before establishing Cairns Surgery.

After completing the RACS General Surgery training program, Dr Wijayanayaka has undertaken a number of sub-specialist fellowships in New Zealand and Australia with a predominant focus on Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery. He completed one of Australia’s only high-volume exclusive bariatric surgery fellowships, under the supervision of Dr George Hopkins at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2022. In 2023 he pursued post-fellowship training in advanced upper GI endoscopic techniques at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.

Dr Wijayanayaka is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and a Member of the Australian & New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO).
